Středočeský kraj
The central–Czech land (Stredocesky kraj) whose capital city is Prague is a diversified area as far as the lie of the land is concerned. A part of it is hilly and another part is lowland. There occur here numerous exceptionally precious natural areas.
In the south – western part of this land there stretches the mountain range Brdy. This is a territory covered with dense forests whose main attraction is the fact that it is almost totally deserted – there are here no tourist centers, hotels and inhabited towns.
In its western part there lies the Krivoklatska pahorkatina – a hilly territory covered by a forest (the area of 63 thousands ha) with characteristic rocky formations being a bio - spherical reserve UNESCO. There are here natural parks Jesenice and Dzban. A great attraction is a canoe flow along the water trail Berounki (60 km, from the town of Zvikoviec to the town of Zadni Trebanie). In this reserve there were marked many tourist trails as well as bicycle and educational paths (among others on the slopes of extinct volcanoes Slanske and Vinarskie hory).
On the territory of the central – Czech land there is also the Czech Kras Landscape Park where you can admire the biggest karst formation in the Czech Republic with the complex of Koniepruskie Caves.
There are here also numerous precious castles. There is here the most famous Czech castle, one of the symbols of the Czech kingdom – Karlstejn. It had been built in the XIV century during the reign of Karol IV, the Czech king and the emperor of the Hole Roman Empire, it had been the place of keeping the Czech and Roman crown jewels. Later on it was rebuilt a few times.
Other castles of the central – Czech land are Krivoklat from the XIII century – one of the older royal castles on the Czech lands with a scenic point on the Huderka tower; Konopiste – primarily gothic, at the end of the XIX century rebuilt in the Romantic style with an extensive English park, a rose garden and a greenhouse; very well preserved Cesky Sternberk (from the XIII century, rebuilt in the XVIII century); the ruins of the castle in the town of Krakoviec. A popular place of recreation for the inhabitants of the city of Prague and the neighborhood is the water dam Slapy (the length of 44 km, the territory of 1162, 6 ha). You can do many water sports here and the terrains that surround the dam are excellently suited for walks, trips and for mushrooming.
