Plzeňský kraj

The pilzneński land (Plzensky kraj) is situated in the western part of the Czech Republic. It is gently rolling and cut with a network of rivers and fish ponds. It boasts a beautiful, almost untouched nature. There are here as many as 177 small protected areas. The biggest natural reserve of this region is the Strela canyon (the territory of 300 ha). On the territory of the pilzneński land there lies a part of an amazingly precious, as far as its nature is concerned, territory of the Sumava National Park (so- called "the green roof of Europe") and the Krivoklatsko National Park which is at the same time the bio – spherical reserve UNESCO. The 2/3 of the territory of this area is covered with mixed forests. There live here at least 52 species of trees. Krivoklatsko is the breeding area for around 120 species of birds and for many types of animals, also rare ones. An interesting element of the landscape is the valley river Berounki. This region is diversified by numerous water basins (the Hracholuska water dam on the Mzi river, the system of Bolevecky fish ponds on the outskirts of the Pilzno city).

The capital city of the pilzneński land and the main center of the whole West Czech is Pilzno. It is worth visiting here among others the fragments of the pre – Romanesque rotunda of saint Peter, the saint Bartłomiej church with the highest (103 m) tower in the Czech Republic, the historical basement – the maze of 3-floor cellars that has been emerging since the Middle Ages, the Renaissance town hall and tenement houses as well as the Great Synagogue in the Moorish – Romanesque style built in the year 1888 (the second biggest in Europe and the third biggest in the world). In the place of destroyed medieval fortifications there had been set up city parks and orchards in the XIX century.

While being in the pilzneński land it is worth staying in the city of Manetin which is called the Baroque pearl of the West Czech and the city of Klatovy with the remnants of medieval fortifications. In the pilzneński land there are also a few precious castles and palaces, among others the oldest stony castle on the territory of the Czech Republic in the city of Primd, the greatest ruins in the Czech Republic in the city of Rabi and an amazingly popular among tourists palace Kozel.
