hlavní město Praha
The city of Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic, as far as administration is concerned it has been sectioned off as a separate land (province) and at the same time it is the capital city of the central – Czech land. Many people consider Prague one of the most beautiful capital cities of Europe. It is situated by the Wełtawa river, almost exactly in the center of Europe. It is located on 9 hills: Letna, Vitkov, Opys, Vetrov, Skalka, Emauzy, Vysehrad, Karlov and Petrin.
The historical center of the city of Prague is on the World Cultural Heritage List UNESCO. The center of Prague consists of 4 districts: Hradcan (the castle district) and Mala Strana on one bank of the Wełtawa river and the Old City and New City on the opposite bank of the river.
The Hradcany castle which overlooks the city is the biggest castle in the world (it has the length of 570 m, the territory of 7,28 ha). The castle complex comprises 3 courtyards, beautiful royal gardens and numerous precious buildings, among others the gothic cathedral of saint Wit, the saint Jerzy basilica and the famous Gold Street.
On the hills under the castle there lies the Mala Strana district. It is necessary to walk along the lovely Neruda street leading to the castle hill. Another attraction of the district is among others the Baroque church of saint Mikołaj and the Wallenstein Palace (XVII century) and an ideal place for rest – the Petrin Hill with a 60 – meter observation tower which is the copy of the Eiffel tower.
The famous Karol’s bridge combines Mala Strana with the Old City. The Old City is the oldest part of the city. One of the greatest tourist attractions of Prague is the XV–century astronomic watch Orloj on the medieval town hall on the market square. Every hour droves of tourists concentrate here to admire the procession of the figures of 12 apostles. On the watch there are also the figures of a Turk, Death, Greed and Vanity.
On the market there is also the saint Mary church near Tyn from the XIV century and since the year 1915 there has stood here the monument of Jan Hus.
The New City had been marked out already in the XIV century but its present – day shape is the result of renovations carried out in the XIX and in the XX century. There is here the Vaclavske namesti – the main square of the modern Prague. It is worth walking the Jewish district of Prague – Josefov where there is the old Jewish cemetery and a few synagogues, among others the oldest synagogue in Europe (the XIII century).
