Košický kraj
The Koszycki Land is situated in the south – eastern part of Slovakia. From the east it borders with Ukraine, from the south with Hungary. It includes the historical regions of Spisz, Lower Zemplin and a little part of Sarysz.
Many believe that the main center of the region, which is at the same time the biggest city in eastern Slovakia, the city of Koszyce, is the most attractive city in the whole Slovakia. The monumental center is the biggest historical city reserve in Slovakia. On the market square there dominates a five – nave gothic cathedral of saint Elisabeth, there stands here also the XIV - century chapel of saint Michael and the tower of saint Urban. There have been preserved medieval defensive walls.
On the territory of the Koszycki Land there are two amazingly popular among tourists national parks. PN Słowacki Kras with 10 natural reserves, 22 natural monuments. The most famous caves, available for visiting are Domica (the longest one, 5368 m), Gombasecka (both on the UNESCO List) as well as Jasowska and Ochtińska Aragonitowa Cave.
In PN Słowacki Paradise there occur deep calcareous canyons and clefts, often with waterfalls. The greatest attraction are the gorges Sucha Bela, Kysel, Dobszyńska Ice Cave (on the UNESCO List), the Hornad River Gorge and also the Sokolia valley where there is the highest waterfall in Slovakian Paradise – Zavojovy vodospad (the height of 80 m).
In the Koszycki Land there are known recreational centers by artificial water reservoirs: Ruzin, Zemplinska Sirava called “The Eastern - Slovakian Sea” (33 km²) and Palcmanska Masa.
The eastern part of Slovakia belongs to the warmer areas of Slovakia, therefore since ages there has been produced here the Tokaj wine. The Slovakian Tokajski Region constitutes the smallest Slovakian wine region but its wines belong to the best ones. It is worth going along the 20 – kilometer route of the Tokajski Wine Trail. Except for tasting and buying good wines, you can visit old cellars where wines are kept.
The main bicycle trails of the region are: the Zadielska Bicycle Trail in the Slovakian Kras (54, 5 km), the bicycle trail around the Slovakian Paradise (74 km) and trails on the areas of the Slovakian Rudawy range and the Lewockie mountains (around 300 km).
