LOCATION

The wielkopolskie province is situated in the mid – western part of Poland. It covers the territory of 29942 km². This region is divided into 35 districts, 4 cities having district rights and 226 communes. Poznań is the administrative center. The biggest cities are: Poznań, Konin, Piła, Kalisz and Leszno. The wielkopolski region lies on the crossroad of significant thoroughfares connecting the Western Europe with Russia (the expressway A2 Berlin – Poznań – Warsaw – Mińsk – Moskwa). The capital city of Wielkopolska and Berlin are linked due to EuroCity trains (Berlin – Poznań – Warsaw). The air transport of this district is attended by the airport Poznań – Ławica Henryk Wieniawski which offers connections with Berlin, London, Liverpool, Copenhagen, Mediolan, Rome, Oslo, Glasgow and the major cities in Poland.

NATURE AND TOURISM

The tourist traffic is concentrated mainly in the Lakelands: the Gnieźnieńskie Lakeland, The Poznańskie Lakeland and the Leszczyńskie Lakeland. There occur here numerous lakes which lure droves of tourists. The shape of narrow gutters linked to one another with many canals create numerous water trails that constitute attractive tourist and recreational terrain. It is worth visiting the Notecki forrest with its sandy dunes as well as the region of the Wielkopolski National Park where there is the Góreckie lake with the summer town of Puszczykowo. The surrounding of Poznań with the Maltański lake where there is the regatta lane and nearby also an artificial ski slope working the whole year round are worth noticing. The wielkopolskie province has also a rich history and many architectural monuments of past ages. The “Piastowski trail” which leads through the towns of Gniezno, Giecz, Ostrów Lednicki and Trzemeszno is popular here. For many tourist the town of Licheń is an important place  - there is here the center of the cult of Mary.
