LOCATION

The opolskie province is situated in the southern part of Poland. It is the smallest region of the country, it covers the territory of 9412 km². In its territory there are 11 districts, 1 city having district rights and 71 communes; 34 cities. The city of Opole is the administrative center. The main cities are: Opole, Brzeg, Nysa. The major part of the opolskie province is taken by the Śląska Lowland. The highest peak of the opolskie province is Biskupia Kopa (892 masl), and the main river is Odra and also Mała Panew and Nysa Kłodzka.

NATURE AND TOURISM

The opolskie province is the biggest aggregation of the German minority in Poland. The tourist – recreation traffic concentrates mainly around the artificial lakes: Turkawskie, Głębinowskie where there are rest centers, an opportunity to do water sports, mountain walking. The picturesquely located town of Głuchołazy plays the role of a spa. The opolskie province is covered with woods in the majority of its area, here there have been created 4 landscape parks and many protected areas and nature reserves. The biggest wood complexes are: Niemodliński Woods, Stobrawskie Woods, Lublinieckie Woods and Raciborskie Woods. One of the more interesting attractions in this province you can find in the town of Krasiejów. There is here the only one in Poland and in Europe so rich in skeletons the burial ground of land animals from the dinosaur age. There has been created here “Dinosaurpark” thanks to which tourists may become the eyewitnesses of the digging out of fossils.

MONUMENTS

The opolskie province is a region rich in monuments from various ages, starting from gothic defensive castles through baroque palaces till the XIX – century small manor houses. Such objects as the following enjoy a great popularity: the castle in the town of Moszna, Piastów Śląskich’s castle in the town of Brzeg, a late – baroque palace in the town of Kamien Slaski and the ruins of the Eternal Palace from the XIX – century in the town of Kopice. Numerous rest centers are situated in the towns of Pokrzywna and Jarnołtówek. A famous pilgrim center for Silesia is the Mountain of Saint Ann with the monastic complex of the Franciszkański order and Kalwaryjne chapels. In the town of Łabanowice you can visit the prisoner – of – war camp from the second world war (with the Central Museum of Prisoners – of – War).
