LOCATION

The mazowieckie province is situated in the mid – eastern part of Poland. It is the biggest province as far as the territory is concerned – 35 597 km². It is divided into 38 districts, 4 cities having district rights and 325 communes; 83 cities.

NATURE

The mazowieckie province is almost wholly located in the region of the Środkowopolskie Lowland. Its landscape mainly consists of flat and slightly rolling plains. Moraine hills are a little diversity as well as river valleys which are at places deeply indented, and sandy dunes in the valley of the Vistula river, the Bug river and on the sandur Kurpiowska plain. This province is located in the basin of the Vistula river.  There occur natural post – glacial lakes but only in the western terrain; among the tens of lakes in the Gostynińskie Lakeland the biggest one is the Zdworskie Lake (3,5 km²) and the Lucieńskie Lake (2km²).
The most extensive water reservoir is the Zegrzyńskie Lake. The mazowieckie province is numbered as one of the weakly woody provinces. The biggest forest complexes are the following forests: Kampinowska, Kurpiowska, Biała, Kozienicka and the forests that run along the right bank of the Vistula river from Maciejowice to the Zegrzyńskie Lake. In this province there occurs one of the biggest in the country National Park – Kampinoski and a few Landscape Parks: Nadbużański, Mazowiecki, Chojnowski, Kozienicki, Brudzeński, part of the Gostynińsko – Włocławski Landscape and the Podlaski Bug River Gorge. The north – eastern regions belong to a district called “The Green Lungs of Poland”. However, already in the region of the Płock city there occurs a terrain of ecological menace.

TOURISM

The mazowieckie province has created  magnificent conditions for the development of tourism and active recreation. One of the main tourist – recreational centers are lakes with baths providing an opportunity to do water sports. Tourists eagerly visit Warsaw. It is the greatest aggregation of monuments. The most precious monuments are: The Old City, The New City, The Royal Castle – typed into the World Cultural and Natural Heritage List UNESCO as well as palace – park complexes in Łazienki and Wilanów Warsaw. There are interesting architectural monuments in the towns of Płock, Pułtusk and Szydłowiec. The fortress in the town of Modlin  - which was built at the command of Napoleon – is a military architectural monument.
