The south–Czech land (Jihocesky kraj) is a territory of woody lowlands, full of lowland bogs and fish ponds. There are here mountain areas. This region is not destroyed by civilization and the nature of this region is uniquely diversified.

LOCATION

The łódzkie province is situated in the central part of Poland. It covers the territory of 18 219 km². This province is divided into 20 districts, 3 cities having district rights and 177 communes; 42 cities. Łódź is the administrative center. The biggest cities are Łódź, Piotrków Trybunalski, Pabianice, Tomaszów Mazowiecki and Bełchatów.

NATURE AND TOURISM

The natural and recreational values of the province have a regional character. The most attractive terrains are the picturesque valleys of the rivers Pilica and Warta. The tourist traffic in the valley of Warta concentrates in the towns of Książe Młyny, Ważne Młyny, Uniejów and by the water reservoir Jeziorsko which creates convenient conditions for doing water sports. The Sulejowskie lake and the Pilicki Wood play a similar function in the valley of the Pilica river. “Blue springs” in Tomaszów Mazowiecki are a precious reserve of this region. Beautiful landscapes are offered by the right – bank tributaries of the Bzura river whose characteristics are big gradients and deep valleys; the river Rawka, which runs through the Bolimowska Wood, creates a picturesque canoe trail. The region of the recreational weekends for the inhabitants of the central part of the province are the woody terrains near the city of Łódź with summer towns disposing baths. The colorful folk culture has a big touring meaning in some regions. The most famous culture is the łowicka culture – original ceremonies, famous piastowskie outfits, cut – outs and folk architecture (the open – air ethnographic museum in Łowicz, Łowicki Ethnographic Park in the town of Maurzyce). There has survived the folklore of the rawska village (the surrounding of Rawa Mazowiecka) and of the opoczyńska willage (the villages of Opoczno and Kraśnica).

MONUMENTS

There are numerous historical castles, palaces and manor houses in the łódzkie province which are available for visiting. These are among others the ruins of the castle in the town of Drzewica from the XVI century, the castle in the town of Łęczyca from the XIV century, the castle in the town of Lutomiersk from the XVI century, the gothic castle from the XV century in the town of Oporowo, the gentry castle from the XV century in the town of Ujeździe, the bishop castle from the XIV century in the town of Uniejowo and the wooden manor house from the XIX century in the town of Kliczkowo Małe.
